Karen Hurley Kuchar became the Executive Director of
Family Shelter Service in 1997. She holds a Master’s degree in
Counseling Psychology, and is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.
Prior to coming to Family Shelter Service, she was the Executive Director of
the Care and Counseling Center in Downers Grove, an agency that addressed
teen pregnancy and prevention. She worked as a counselor and Women’s
Program Director at the Childhood Trauma Treatment Program in Bolingbrook,
IL, a program that serves victims of sexual abuse. She had a private
practice in the western suburbs for twenty years, specializing in working
with adult survivors of sexual abuse. Karen is a Board member of the
Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence and a member of the Children’s
Justice Task Force, a statewide advisory board to the Department of Children
and Family Services. She chairs two committees for the 18th
Judicial Circuit Family Violence Coordinating Council. She was named
Outstanding Woman Leader of DuPage County, Community Service Professional,
in 2003.
