Date: 2/28/2010 Time: 3:00 PM 1032 Maple Avenue Downers Grove, IL 60515 Phone: 630-515-0030 Event Description: The Downers Grove Choral Society’s February 28 program will feature three selections of strikingly beautiful classical choral music. The 55-member chorus will be accompanied by an orchestra of professional musicians. The master choral works will be enjoyed by all who love great music, and will be of particular interest to those who love traditional, classical music of a religious nature. The goal of the program is to present an innovative mix of highly enjoyable pieces, tied to religion but varied in style and mood. The program consists of: Mass in G by Franz Schubert Schubert’s Mass in G was written in 1815. It is a simple and lyrical work, with charming melodies. It features a blend of choral singing with lovely vocal solos and the sweetness of a string orchestra. It remains among the most popular and most loved of classical Masses. It will be sung in Latin. Triptych by Tarik O’Regan Tarik O’Regan is a contemporary composer currently on staff at Cambridge, Columbia and Harvard Universities. The premiere recording of Triptych received two Grammy nominations in 2009 for Best Classical Album and Best Choral Performance. The piece is exciting, moving, and rhythmic with North African influence. The texts urge us to live in harmony with our fellow men, and were drawn from English, Indian, and Islamic traditions as well as the Bible. It will be sung in English with a large string ensemble. Mass in D by Antonín Dvorák Dvorák wrote the Mass in D in 1887, and it bears the romantic signature of the late 19th Century: expressive, emotional, with strong melodies, lush with the full orchestra that will accompany the chorus. The Mass in D is an underappreciated masterpiece that is performed infrequently. A program that includes this magnificent Mass with full orchestra is an event to be treasured. It too will be sung in Latin. Directions: First United Methodist Church Need more information?
