Event Description:

Residents can drop off old electronic devices, waste items at Benedictine University.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that as much as three quarters of the computers sold in the United States are stockpiled in garages and closets. When thrown away, they end up in landfills or incinerators or are exported to Asia.

To ensure that these items are properly disposed or recycled, area residents are encouraged to bring their electronics and other waste materials to “Sustainable Saturday in Lisle” from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 in the parking lot adjacent to the Dan and Ada Rice Center on the campus of Benedictine University.

The event is sponsored by Benedictine University, the Village of Lisle and the School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) of Glen Ellyn.

Items accepted include: electronics (computers, televisions, monitors, telephones, VCRs, DVD players, keyboards, stereos, fax machines, copy machines and printers); ink jet cartridges (no toner cartridges); eyeglasses, hearing aids and old keys; fire extinguishers; and scrap metal (lawn furniture, swing sets, pots and pans, etc.).

Also, worn American flags; cell phones; bicycles in any condition (no Big Wheels or toddler-type bikes); and sealed-lead acid (SLA) batteries (which include batteries for cars, motorcycles, boats, lawn mowers, sump pumps and sport vehicles).

Batteries should be contained in a sturdy box or plastic tub to minimize handling. Residents should keep batteries separate from other items and place them in their vehicle last so that they can be removed by specially trained workers.

DuPage County has limited money to support the paper shredding component, so that station has been eliminated from the event his year. No hazardous waste will be accepted.

Benedictine University is located at the corner of Maple Avenue and College Road in Lisle. A map of campus can be found at http://www.ben.edu/aboutus/campusmap.cfm.

Due to construction on campus, entrance to and exit from the event has changed from the previous two years. Cars must enter campus at the traffic light off College Road (south of Maple Avenue) and exit on to College Avenue north and east of the Rice Center lot.
