The Treatment Center is located at 5003 Walnut Avenue, three blocks north of Maple Avenue at the Burlington Northern railroad tracks. The Open House provides an excellent opportunity to learn about wastewater collection and treatment and its critical role in improving water quality. Tours will be provided and will offer an introduction to all components of wastewater treatment including sanitary engineering, aquatic, biology, organic chemistry and public administration. The tour will start with a presentation about wastewater treatment which will give an overview of the process. The facilities viewed during the tour include primary, secondary and tertiary treatment units, nitrification, chlorination and dechlorination processes, biosolids handling, emergency power operations, and energy conservation methods. The tour includes the viewing of fish living in a tank of treated wastewater - a graphic demonstration of the quality of the treated wastewater for aquatic life. A majority of the tour is walking, indoors and outdoors, and visitors should dress accordingly for outdoor weather conditions. In past years, the Open House has been attended by as many as 400 people and is always well received. There will be several exhibits (which will include samples from the Treatment Center's Laboratory that performs over 40,000 analyses each year), informational materials and refreshments. Tours should be considered by youth groups and students for extra credit projects or merit badges. Anyone bringing a youth group should call the office at (630) 969-0664 to schedule a tour.
