Date: 11/20/2012 Time: 7:30 PM TO 9:30 PM 5021 Highland Avenue Downers Grove, IL 60515 Phone: 630-968-0360 Event Description: Conductor Jim Ripley and the Carthage College Wind Orchestra is undertaking a special fall musical tour to perform an unique accompaniment to the 1926 classic silent film, “The General.” On Tuesday, November 20th, the orchestra will be at the historic Tivoli Theatre, located at 5021 Highland Avenue in downtown Downers Grove. The performance is slated for 7:30 pm in which Carthage College will use a special screen to accommodate the orchestra. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Generally regarded as one of the top ten silent films of all time, “The General” is a famous Buster Keaton comedy set in the Civil War and based on the historical event known as The Great Locomotive Chase. Conducted by Dr. James Ripley, music for the accompaniment is drawn from the catalog of works for band by James Barnes, with additional Civil War tunes set for band by Carthage alumnus Richard Baller. Carthage is a private college of the liberal arts and sciences, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The U.S. News & World Report named Carthage a 2010 “Best Baccalaureate College” as well as a 2010 Best College in the Midwestern Region by The Princeton Review. Carthage College Wind Orchestra is one of the oldest college bands in the United States. The Tivoli Theatre will be the orchestra’s final stop of their Midwest tour so don’t miss out!
