Date: 10/3/2015 Time: 9:00 PM TO 12:00 PM 5003 Walnut Ave Downers Grove, IL 60515 Phone: 630-969-0664 Event Description: The Downers Grove Sanitary District invites the community to visit the Wastewater Treatment Center during the 26th annual Open House on Saturday, October 3. This year’s Open House theme, “Preserving Today’s River for Tomorrow”, will focus on how the Sanitary District protects the environment through green practices and programs including the vital process of wastewater collection and treatment. The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 3 at the District’s Treatment Center, 5003 Walnut Avenue, Downers Grove (three blocks north of Maple Avenue at the Burlington Northern railroad tracks). The Open House is free and open to the public. Refreshments will also be provided. Through several informational exhibits and displays, visitors will learn about the different components of the Sanitary District, all dedicated to the goal of preserving water quality in our local community and beyond. During the Open House, tours will be provided that offer an introduction to all aspects of wastewater treatment including sanitary engineering, aquatic biology, organic chemistry and public administration. Visitors will have the opportunity to see firsthand how the Treatment Plant operates such as the three different treatment units, nitrification, chlorination and dechlorination processes. The additional treatment processes of biosolids handling, emergency power operations and energy conservation methods are also highlighted. The tour also includes a viewing of fish living in a tank of treated wastewater—a demonstration of the quality of the treated wastewater for aquatic life! A majority of the tour is walking, indoors and outdoors, and visitors should dress accordingly for outdoor weather conditions. Tours should be considered by youth groups and students for extra credit projects or merit badges. Anyone bringing a youth group should call the office at (630) 353-3606 to schedule a tour.
